A merger is the combining of two entities.  Usually, shares of the surviving entity issues a number of its shares for each share of the merged entity.

In Advisors Assistant, if the investor has both entities, then a merger can be handled as a share adjustment, filling in the basis per share as defined in the merger materials.  Be sure to freeze the basis and to add notes to the transaction.
