A Lot or Basis Lot is referred to by some as a Tax Lot. It is a record that is established when shares are added to Advisors Assistant. The lot tracks the number of shares and the basis per share.
When any of these shares are sold, the lot may change.
Adding Shares
When shares are added, a lot is set up. As long as any shares in this lot still exist, the lot will remain and be viewable under the Shares Held Perspective of the View Investment With Cost Basis Screen. The lot tracks the number of shares and the cost per share. You can modify these values by modifying the lot on the View Investment With Cost Basis Screen.
You can also freeze the basis for shares held from the Modify Transaction Screen, which also shows the basis per share.
Selling Shares
When shares are sold, Advisors Assistant will take action automatically based on the cost basis election in the Modify Investment Screen.
If only part of the shares established in a lot are sold, a partial lot will be established and maintained as unsold shares.
Advisors Assistant will allocate the lots based on the cost basis election in the Modify Investment Screen.
For Example, if the election is FIFO, First In First Out, Advisors Assistant will begin allocating the shares sold to the oldest lot and continue allocating lots until all the shares in the sell transaction are allocated.
You can see the breakdown of the allocation of shares by highlighting a sell transaction on the View Investment With Cost Basis Screen, (Shares Sold Perspective) and clicking on the modify button.
